Redesign for Italo Calvino’s 1972 novel Invisible Cities, inspired by the work of Enid Marx and Vintage's 2017 editions of Russian classics. I created a tessellating pattern based around an illustration of Venice, the city Calvino describes throughout his twisting narrative.
I wanted to convey the playful spirit of Calvino’s text, and have hand drawn the font for the title and the borders around the text to create an off-kilter aesthetic. 'Invisible Cities' is a critically acclaimed work of postmodern literature, but it's also a lot of fun to read. My design combines a sense of literary prestige with a lively illustration style to make the novel appear more accessible.
